The early years after WWII saw older men who had sustained the Docks through the War years and had learnt their skills in the early decades of the Twentieth Century, still working with a discipline little changed since Victorian times. AE Smith worked in the Royal Docks from 1947 until their demise three decades later and was an eye-witness to the events and conditions described here. Wide ranging yet detailed, this account describes the people, cargoes, equipment and craft involved in the manhandling of hundreds of tons of disparate items out of ships' holds and into barges or onto the backs of lorries. Focusing on Royal Mail Lines and their general cargo stevedores, Furness Withy, this record is a last look at a working environment long since extinct as recalled first hand by someone who knew the formidable commitment involved in achieving their work rates.

A fascinating account, of interest to anyone who had any connection with London's Royal Docks. I joined my first ship in King George V dock in 1970, and returned there (or to Tilbury) after every deep sea trip for the next 3 years. Although the book covers the fifties, it's easy to recognise the same dock practices seen there in the 70's. Surprised to note the absence of any mention of the Central Buffet, at the Royal Albert Dock, such a lively place when the dockers were getting their breakfast 'sarnies' and a pint or two before work started. As a deck cadet, my early morning routine was to slip out through a 'wicket gate' into Silvertown to buy the newspapers for the Captain and officers, and have them all back and delivered before breakfast. All in all a great read, delivered with essential East End humour!Product details

I was a young seaman in the early sixties and used to go in and out of the Royal`s frequently. Best book I have read on London's Royal Docks. The book really gives you a feel for what those days were like.
